Beginner Nail Technician Essentials Checklist for 2023

As a nail technician, there are several tools and supplies that you will need in order to provide a variety of nail services. Lets say that in the beginning you will be offering only gel polish manicures. Here are some essentials:

  1. Gel polish: You will need a selection of colours and finishes, including base coats and top coats.

  2. LED/UV nail lamp: This is used to cure (harden) the gel polish.

  3. Gel polish remover: This is used to remove old gel polish and prepare the nails for a new polish application. You can also file down the gel polish.

  4. Nail clippers: These are used to trim and shape the nails.

  5. Cuticle pusher and nipper: These tools are used to gently push back the cuticles and remove excess cuticle tissue.

  6. Nail files: These are used to shape and smooth the edges of the nails.

  7. Prep and prime: Depending on the chosen brand of gel polish you will also need to buy their prep and prime products. They are used to dehydrate the nail plate and improve adhesion.

  8. Lint-free pads: These are used together with the prep and prime to clean the nail plate

  9. Sanitation supplies: These include items like disinfectant spray for surfaces or tools.  It is important to keep your work area clean and sanitized to prevent the spread of infection.

  10. Cuticle oil: This is used to moisturize and nourish the cuticles.

  11. Nail art (optional): These may include dotting tools, brushes, stamping plates, foils, chromes and other tools to create nail art designs.

  12. E-file and drill bits (optional): This will greatly speed up your work and help with the removal of old product and cuticles.
